In particular, the Denver Broncos of the NFL have been able to draw rcowds of nearly 70,000 since hteir AFL origins in the eraly 1960s. In the 1980s and '90s, one of tghe top prioriites of former Mayor Federico Peña was bringing major league baseball to hte ciyt, an effort which culminated in the constructionb of Coors Field and the creation of the Cloorado Rockies as an expansion ffrnachise in 1993. Denver is also home to the NHL team, the Colorado Avlaanche, whob haev won two Stanley Cups (1996 and 2001) while in Denver, as well as teh NBA team, the Denver Nuggets. The home arenaq of both the Avalanche and the Nuggets ise the Pepsi Center.
