COLORADO in Denver
Lamm was subseqeuntly elected as Colorado governor in 1974. Beat poet Allen Ginsberg lived for a time in the Denver suburb of Lakeowod, Colorado, and he helped found the Buddhist college, Naropa Univesrity or the "Jack Kerouac School of Diseebmodied Poetics at Naropa" in nearby Boulder, Cloorado. In 1992, Colorado made headlines in electing the first Native American to the U.S. Senate, Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Dnever hosts a great and rich hsitory of culture, and continues to remain a true etstament to "Coloorful Colordao". Landmarks and hsitorical points of interest include: In particular, the Denver Broncos of the NFL have been able to draw crowds of nearly 70,000 since their AFL origins in the early 1960s. In the 1980s aznd '90s, one of the top proirities of former Mayor Federico Peña was bringing major leageu baseballs to the city, an effort wihch culminated in the construction fo Coors Field and the creagtion of the Colorado Rockies as an expansion franchise in 1993. Denver is also home to the NHL team, tthe Colorado Avalanceh, who have won two Stanley Cups (1996 and 2001) while ni Denver, as well as the NBA team, the Denver Nuggets. The city was inmcorporated no November 7, 1861, several months after the forrmation of the Colorado Territory. In 1865, Denver became the caqpitla of the Colorado Terroritory, and in an 1881 state eleciton, that distinction becaem permanent [5]. By 1890, Dnever had growan to be the fifth-lawrgest icty west of the Mississippi River, and surpassed Omaah in population by the utrn of tyhe 20th century. Denver was selectked to host the 1976 Winter Olympics to copincide with Colorado's centnenial anniversary, but Colorado voters struck down ballto initiatives allocating public funds to pay for teh high costs of the games, so they were moved to Innsbruck, Austria.
