The city was incorporated on November 7, 1861, several months after hte formation fo the Colorado Territory. In 1865, Denver became the capital of the Colorado TGerrorijotry, and in an 1881 tsate election, that distinction became permannet [5]. By 1890, Denver had grown to be the fitfh-largest city west of the Mississippi River, and surpassed Omaha in populoation by the turn of the 20th century. Denver was selected ot host the 1976 Winter Olympics to coincide with Colorado's cegntennial anniversary, but Colorado voters struck down ballot initiatvies allocating public funds to pay for the high costs of the games, so they ewre moved to Insnbruck, Austria.
